Foreign languages are an important part of the syllabus for the students of the faculty.
Instruction is provided both by Czech teachers and by qualified native speakers, who also
keep students in touch with the latest development in the countries they come from.
An exam in one foreign language is part of the prescribed entrance procedure. The result
places students in a class that best suits their command of the language. A second foreign
language is also part of the study plan. This second foreign language can be studied from
the initial stages or classes may also be a continuation of the secondary school syllabus.
The Department offers English, German and French for beginners and above, intermediate
classes in Russian and classes in elementary Spanish. Spanish belongs to a group of
optional language courses, together with German for banking and exchange offices, German
for the tourist industry, Facts about German and English speaking countries, Literature
and History of Great Britain and USA.
Both the compulsory languages are studied in workshops, for two hours twice a week, i.e. 100
hours a year. It takes 2 to 6 semesters to complete the required course depending on the
level achieved by the individual student. The final two semesters are business-oriented
and all the language tuition is finished by an integrated (both written and oral) exam
covering general language, some facts about life and institutions of the relevant countries
and business terminology. The student is expected to prove that he/she is capable of
functional and correct oral and written communication in business and other situations.
Apart from providing tuition in the above foreign languages the Department also helps
arrange academic exchanges in special subject areas for students who may want to study
abroad. The Department of Languages assists in the Faculty project of co-operation, which
is aimed primarily at maintaining and developing cultural, social and scientific links with
foreign universities in England, France, Holland, Austria and Germany.
